Chapter Fifteen

Damn the woman. She managed to look both vulnerable and strong with her wet, brown hair clinging to her cheeks, and Brian’s heart lurched as he watched her walk away. Why was he still hanging around, anyway? She’s given him the chance to cut himself loose, but for some reason, ever since she’d told him about her inheritance, Brian had found his irritation gradually replaced with something else.

You’re just curious to see what the crazy American will do next, he told himself as he headed out into the rain. Brian knew he was trying to fool himself, and doing a piss poor job of it, too.

He wasn’t interested in seeing what she did; he was interested in her. After that kiss, he’d almost convinced himself that she was interested in him, too.

It had seemed unforgivable when she left him standing at the airport all those years ago. At the time, Brian had been crushed. He’d never gone out on a limb like that for a girl, and her rejection nearly broke him.

And then he’d seen her again.

He shook his head, not noticing the raindrops that spattered around him as he moved. He’d often wondered what it would have been like if she’d stayed. Would they be married by now, or would their love have fizzled out eventually? There was no way to know what might have been, but that didn’t stop Brian from trying to puzzle it out. And now there was a new question to be asked: what did the future hold for them?

Brian knew that he wouldn’t have any reason to be angry if she sold the professor’s house and returned to her life in the States. But Brian realized that he would mind if she left. He would mind a lot.

She might stay. If she were to stay in St. Andrews, Brian mused, the two of them would have to see each other from time to time. He wasn’t sure what he thought of that, but his lips curved up in a smile as he walked. Maybe we’d have a second chance. The minute the thought flickered through his mind, Brian wanted to kick himself.

Grumbling under his breath, Brian turned his key in the lock of his sister’s front door. A blast of hot air hit him as he stepped over the threshold, and Brian groaned.

“Sharon! For God’s sake, it’s not the depth of winter. It’s only September!”

A tall, blonde woman came around the corner from the direction of the kitchen. She was wearing a short sweater dress over a pair of holey leggings, and she had a pair of hot pink slippers on her feet. Her frizzy hair was plopped in a messy bun on top of her head, and she rolled her eyes at him. “Shut up. I’m cold, and it’s my petrol bill.”

Brian flopped down on her couch, hurrying to unwrap his scarf and shed his jacket. “It feels like Hell in here.”

She flicked him off with a smile. “It’s only this hot because I’m making cookies.
